Midweek fix: PARABENS

Hello Lovelies,

Welcome to my new “Midweek fix” section which will focus mainly on ingredients, how they work and what good/ or bad they do to us and our skin.

The whole organic and natural concept can be a bit scary and overwhelming when it comes to reading labels and understanding what all these ingredients actually mean and how they affect our skin and health. I have to admit that even after many months of studying etiquettes, I’m still feeling a little baffled sometimes. Let’s make it as digestible as possible! I’ll start off with the most common one called: Parabens. Let’s get started.

Parabens

WHAT ARE THEY:

Parabens are chemicals commonly used as preservatives to kill bacteria and give the products longer shelf live. As you can imagine, nowadays parabens can be found in the majority of foods, cosmetics and other everyday products like washing liquid. They are found naturally in fruits like blueberries and are made chemically as well.

MAIN CONCERNS:

According to various sources, parabens are treated as endocrine disruptors and can interfere with the body hormones regulating metabolism, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood. Risk of cancer is the second most common concern but the evidence is not strong enough to jump into conclusions.

THE MOST COMMON NAMES:

butylparaben,  methylparaben and propylparaben, methylparaben and ethylparaben

Other harmful preservatives which might be used as an alternative for parabens are: formaldehyde-releasing DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea

CONCLUSION:

Parabens it’s probably one of the most controversial ingredients I came across. I trust that in low amounts they’re not harmful, in fact, due to their ability to prevent from mould and bacteria, they’re rather beneficial. However, the issue has been raised and “there is no smoke without the fire” as they say, so my choice is to go for paraben- free options in the cosmetic department as much as possible. I try to choose products with non-toxic preservatives (vegetable glycerin, neem oil, 190-proof alcohol) or antioxidants and essential oils with preservative properties (turmeric, rosemary, oregano, thyme or tea tree).

MY PRODUCT CHOICE:

Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream
